Try
/extract[:path]
. With that swith the Update.exe or Hotfix.exe extracts the files without starting the installation. Here is a complete list of command-line swithes for Update.exe: http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;262841

That first command you listed for hotfix installing - is there a way to just extract from the .exe instead of actually applying/advertising the hotfix? I'm building a windows 7 image w/ updates slipstreamed in but have only found how to extract from .MSUs. Do you have any ideas? I tried the expan -f command on the .exe's and all it does is copy it to the destination location.

Tell that to the guys at nlite & vlite...
Making these hacks for re-distribution is a waste, making them for yourself can be quite a usefull tool...

I have a slimmed XP used for pulling data off dead drives
on a machine dedicated for doing such a job, the machine boots in around 20 seconds & uses minimal cpu & ram resources...

Horses for courses... ;-)

Yes, you can learn something by creating such a hacked-together OS, but you can also learn by coding something useful. Ultimately everyone has to decide for theirself whether creating a custom OS or not, but I have learned that it is wasted time. ^^
